  1. !VoySafe - !Voyager News and Mail Backups

  11. Remove the old version
  12. ----------------------
  13.  
  14. If you have a previous version installed, please remove it beforehand. This
  15. involves a number of steps:
  16.  
  17. 1) Make a backup first - just in case!
  18.  
  19. 2) De-install from the !Voyager Vix Manager
  20.    - load !Voyager
  21.    - from the icon bar menu select Preferences -> Vix Manager
  22.    - select VIX:VoySafe in the window which appears
  23.    - click the 'Remove' icon, then 'Close'
  24.    - quit !Voyager
  25.  
  26. 3) Remove the !VoySafe application from within !Voyager
  27.    - open up !Voyager.Apps
  28.    - you will see a number of directories, including one called 'VoySafe'
  29.      do one of the following to it:-
  30.      a) Rename it to something else ('OldSafe') for example
  31.      b) Move it somewhere else on your hard disk
  32.      c) Delete it - but only if you're confident you won't need to refer to
  33.         the backups already contained within it anymore
  34.  
  35. 4) Remove the !Backup file from within !NewsAgent
  36.    - open up !Voyager.Apps.News.!NewsAgent
  37.    - you will see a number of files, including one called '!Backup'
  38.      as with the 'VoySafe' directory, above, you must either rename, move, or
  39.      delete this file.
  40.  
  41. 5) Remove the VoySafe lines from the !NewsAgent.!Run file
  42.    - load the file !Voyager.Apps.News.!NewsAgent.!Run into your text editor
  43.    - find the following two lines, and remove them:-
  44.  
  45.       IF "<VoySafe$Path>"="" THEN Error !VoySafe has not been seen by the filer
  46.       Run <NewsAgent$Dir>.!Backup
  47.  
  48.    - resave the file.
  49.  
  50. Having carried out the above steps, !VoySafe will have been successfully
  51. deinstalled. You can now run !Voyager again, without !VoySafe installed.
  52.  
  53.  
  54. Installing the new version
  55. --------------------------
  56.  
  57. 1) Make a backup copy - just in case!
  58.  
  59. 2) Put the new files in place
  60.    - open the directory containing your copy of !Voyager
  61.    - drag the !Voyager application from this archive onto your existing
  62.      !Voyager. This contains the new files that need to be placed inside
  63.      !Voyager, and is the easiest way to copy them over.
  64.  
  65. 3) Make !NewsAgent do it's backups
  66.    - Load the !Voyager.Apps.News.!NewsAgent.!Run file into your editor.
  67.    - Find the line that says:-
  68.  
  69.       Set NewsAgent$Dir <Obey$Dir>                                
  70.      
  71.      and add the following straight after it:-
  72.  
  73.       If "<VoySafe$Running>"="1" Then Error Please quit !VoySafe before running news.
  74.       If "<VoySafe$Path>"="" Then Error !VoySafe has not been seen by the filer
  75.       Set VoySafe$NoRun 1
  76.       Run <VTiInternet$Dir>.Apps.VoySafe.!VoySafe.BackupNews
  77.  
  78.    - Resave the file
  79.  
  80. 4) Allow !VoySafe to be run when !NewsAgent isn't running:-
  81.    - Load the file !Voyager.Apps.News.!NewsAgent.!NewsAgent into your editor.
  82.    - Add the following line to the very end:-
  83.      
  84.       Unset VoySafe$NoRun
  85.  
  86.    - Resave the file.
  87.  
  88. 5) Allow !PostyUser to do it's backups
  89.    - Load the !Voyager.Apps.Mail.!Run file into your editor
  90.    - Find the line:-
  91.  
  92.       Run <Posty$Dir>.!PostyUser.!Boot
  93.  
  94.      and add the following four immediately after it:-
  95.  
  96.       If "<VoySafe$Running>"="1" Then Error Please quit !VoySafe before running mail.
  97.       If "<VoySafe$Path>"="" Then Error !VoySafe has not been seen by the filer
  98.       Set VoySafe$NoRun 1
  99.       Run <VTiInternet$Dir>.Apps.VoySafe.!VoySafe.BackupMail
  100.  
  101.      Also add the following line to the very end of the file:-
  102.  
  103.       Unset VoySafe$NoRun
  104.  
  105.    - Resave the file
  106.  
  107. 6) Install the Vix module, so that !VoySafe can be run from !Voyager
  108.    - Load !Voyager, if you haven't already done so
  109.    - From the Icon bar menu, select Preferences -> Vix Manager
  110.    - Drag one of the two supplied Vix Modules to the large square marked ViX:-
  111.      * If you are using a standard Voyager, the Vix Module for you is the
  112.        datafile called VSafeStand.
  113.      * If you are running the 'LittleVoy' Vix Module, by Christina West and
  114.        Andy Davis, the Vix Module for you is the 'VSafeSmall' datafile.
  115.    - Click the 'Close' icon
  116.    - Quit and restart !Voyager
  117.

  119. Making Backups
  120. --------------
  121.  
  122. No further action is required by you. Now, whenever you run either News or
  123. Mail (after a download), a backup of that application's data files is made.
  124. Additionally, the first time you run either of them, a complete backup of
  125. that application is made, which you can fall back on if any major problems
  126. come up.       
  127.  
  128. !VoySafe retains three levels of backup for each of news and mail (once each
  129. has been run three times!). This means that for News, for example, you always
  130. have a backup from the last time, the time before that, and the time before
  131. that, of your data.
  132.  
  133. In each case, a backup is only made when you run the applications after a
  134. download:-
  135.  
  136. For news it checks for the existence of the file !Voyager.Apps.News.News,
  137. and if that is present makes a backup.
  138.  
  139. For mail, it checks for !Voyager.Apps.Mail.Transports.Incomming.Email, and
  140. if that is present makes a backup.
  141.  
  142.  
  143. Using the !VoySafe application
  144. ------------------------------
  145.  
  146. Click the !VoySafe icon in your main !Voyager window. This displays the
  147. main !VoySafe window, in which you will see the following options:-
  148.  
  149. Restore News        - clicking this will restore the most recently
  150.                       backed up news data.
  151. Restore Mail        - clicking this will restore the most recently
  152.                       backed up mail data.
  153. Flush News History  - clicking this will wipe the contents of the
  154.                       history directory in the news fetcher. In the
  155.                       main, you won't need to do this unless you are
  156.                       likely to manually alter the news subscribed
  157.                       and groups files.
  158. Flush Email Flags   - clicking this will wipe the email program flags
  159.                       file. This is sometimes necessary following a
  160.                       crash of the mail program.
  161.  
  162. To quit !VoySafe click on the close icon.
  163.  
  164. If a problem occurs while running News or Mail that you feel requires you to
  165. run !VoySafe, first make absolutely sure that neither application is running
  166. before carrying out any of the above. You may also need to close any open
  167. files before use.

  171. Restoring older news or mail data
  172. ---------------------------------
  173.  
  174. If you feel you need to do this, the following steps should be carried out:-
  175.  
  176.  - Open up !Voyager.Apps.!VoySafe.Backups
  177.  - You will see two directories: News and Mail, open up whichever of these
  178.    is relevant. You will now see three numbered directories (1-3) and one
  179.    other directory (Mail, or News).
  180.  - Rename the directory '1' as something else (eg '1b)
  181.  - Rename either '2' or '3' as '1' - depending on which you wish to restore.
  182.  - Rename the renamed '1' to whichever directory you renamed as '1'
  183.  - Having carried out the above, you can run !VoySafe as normal to carry out
  184.    the restore.
  185.  
  186. Please keep in mind the folowing:-
  187.  
  188. * If restoring an older mail backup, you will effectively lose any mails
  189.   received /after/ that backup was made.
  190. * If restoring an older news backup, you will need to flush the news history
  191.   if you wish to download news that would have been covered in the more recent
  192.   backup.

  195. Restoring either of the two applications
  196. ----------------------------------------
  197.  
  198. If at any time you need to restore either of the 'complete' applications,
  199. the following procedure should be carried out:-
  200.  
  201. 1) Open !Voyager.Apps
  202.  
  203. 2) Rename the directory for whichever of the two applications you are
  204.    going to restore. For example, if !NewsAgent rename News to BrokenNews
  205.  
  206. 3) Open VoySafe.!VoySafe.Backups (leaving !Voyager.Apps open)
  207.  
  208. 4) Inside !VoySafe.Backups there are two directories, Mail and News, open
  209.    the appropriate one.
  210.  
  211. 5) You will see three numbered directories (1-3) and one called either 'Mail'
  212.    or 'News' - copy this into the !Voyager.Apps directory
  213.  
  214.  
  215. Please keep in mind the folowing:-
  216.  
  217. * In restoring the 'complete' mail backup, you will effectively lose any mails
  218.   received /after/ that backup was made. After doing this, it may be wise to
  219.   run !VoySafe and restore the most recent backup. *This will depend on the
  220.   circumstances that made you restore the application*
  221.  
  222. * If restoring the 'complete' news backup, you will need to flush the news
  223.   history if you wish to download news that would have been covered in the more 
  224.   recent backup. Alternatively, as with mail, above, run !VoySafe to restore
  225.   the most recent backup. *This will depend on the circumstances that made you
  226.   restore the application*

  229. Bugs
  230. ----
  231.  
  232. There is a minor bug in the Vix manager whereby the !VoySafe icon does not get
  233. greyed out when carrying out a quickfetch, as it should. It /is/ correctly
  234. greyed out when you log on fully.
  235.  
  236. Not actually a bug, this, but I'll put it here anyway: Because of the way in
  237. which NewsAgent stores its files, !VoySafe can be very slow to back them up,
  238. especially when you first run it - when the entire News directory is copied.
  239.  
  240. Similarly, the mail backup can also be slow - email files can become very
  241. large.

  244. Remember
  245. --------

  247. !VoySafe is my first multitasking program - keep this in mind when picking
  248. faults :-)

  254. This software has been tried under a variety of different circumstances, and
  255. has so far proven successful. However, there are any number of different ways
  256. in which things can go wrong, so I can make no guarantee of its viability in
  257. all situations.
